Oh yea he is not a run it up coach , but I guess what I was trying to say , and especially for WRs is we don’t sub that often . I think we have the depth to go 6-7 deep the last couple years but you rarely see them
And I agree with the not showing your opponent up . As a coach and old school on the way I was coached , what goes around comes around

Definitely, I still remember the look Saban had in his face when Henry broke off the long run against Arkansas late in the game.
I agree, never liked the idea of running up the score. Game is in hand, run out the clock, and avoid injuries.

I always think of Eddie Lacy in the Citrus Bowl against MSU. I never took it as Saban being mad about running up the score, but being mad at the other team's coach cause we are running basic plays so we don't run up the score and make it as easy on you as possible and you all can't even stop that .

I fully support a rule where as soon as a game reaches a 40 point margin anytime after the half or a 30 point margin at any time in the 4th quarter it automatically triggers a running clock. Aside from getting a handful of live reps for backups there's really just no point in extending a game that's 49-3 with 5 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter.

Tua got to come in and run offense, and the 'backup' receivers he was playing with were Jeudy, Ruggs, and Smith. Young was not allowed to run offense. He came in and it was drain the clock time. Trying to compare him to Tua is absurd.
I think maybe Saban just didnt trust our defense enough this past season, and just wanted to try to shorten and get the game over. So he just ran the clock with Young

He looked completely lost every time he saw action last year, but considering he didn't have spring practice or anything and he was a freshman, I think that's understandable to a degree.

Well at least it won’t/ shouldn’t be much debate about who the QB will be this year so maybe nobody will get banned this off-season

He looked sooo small. Can't gain height but hopefully an off-season in the conditioning program will put a few pounds of muscle on him.
I think he'll be fine, but definitely needs a full spring.
It seems our QB room is a little thin. Seems most of the highly ranked '22 QBs are committed. Doesn't mean we can't flip one, but if not, we need an elite one in '23.

Yea I alluded to that a month or so ago, if one transfers or god forbid suffers a serious injury , it will be razor thin

2017 Tua is going to be the benchmark people set for backup QBs now unfortunately. Even though that was a complete outlier and literally every other starting QB Saban has had looked like crap outside of a few throws when they came in for mop up duty. AJ looked bad, Sims looked bad, Coker looked bad, Mac looked bad. They all turned out just fine as starters though.

I fondly remember that '11 Penn State game when A.J. McCarron cemented his spot over Phillip Sims. (Hard to believe that was almost 10 years ago.)
That was one of the best old-school uniform games ever, and I loved seeing us play in Beaver Stadium.

I'm very interested in Byrce as well. Almost started this post myself the last few days.
But, really there just isnt a ton to say.
He needed spring practice and the summer last year and didnt get it. He has all the physical talent and abilities, but its gonna be more about him learning the offense, getting comfortable, getting up to speed, and reading the defenses. Basically he needs mind(brain) practice and we'll have to see how well he comes along with those skills.
Not really gonna know much until spring practice and scrimmages start happening.

I mean a ton of this board said he would take over from Mac by the UGA game

Well, he had no spring and limited summer, limited fall, and Mac played better than any other quarterback in college football. So yeah, that will hurt your chances of beating out a veteran.

I didn't predict it one way or another but this is very true. Basically Mac played better than anyone expected and Bryce had less time to develop than anyone expected (missing spring and much of summer).
I wasn't wowed by Bryce when he played but just like the previous post on back-ups mentioned - almost all our backups have looked like shite. I remember Blake Sims looking like he had never played QB in the spring game right before having a great season. I remember when Tua got hurt against UT year before last. I live in Tennessee and was listening to their postgame. They said: 'well they got us this year but they are finally going to struggle next year. That Mac Jones kid isn't beating many teams in the SEC.' Mac of course went on to beat everyone team in the SEC besides the two worst which he didn't play.

Fanbase is going to have to cut him some slack. We've had magic at that position for 3 years.
Now there's tons of player turnover, plus a new OC.
I expect us to return to earth a little on O...hopefully that gives the defense a moment in the sun.

I thought Young looked fine especially considering no spring practice and limited voluntary summer work with the wide receivers.
He completed about 60% of his passes on the year which was better than either of the 2 LSU freshmen qbs, and I only mention LSU qbs because it's pretty much all your hear about on the Rant forum. Young's completion pct and qb rating was close to that of Jalen Hurts freshman year, and a lot of Jalen's completions were basically long handoffs, jet sweeps.
For an example of his potential, I remember one play, perhaps vs Missouri, when there was a really bad snap from center that could easily have been a turnover, but Young not only retained possession, but completed a pass play. A lot of experienced qbs would have failed on that play, let alone a true freshman with little practice and few game opportunities.
I am confident Young will play well.

We dont need him to be a superstar from day one. But I would like to see him protect the football.
Interceptions are gonna happen here and there, but we dont need him fumbling, taking huge sacks, and stuff like that.

He reminded me of Tua without all the scrambling. He held the ball too long but it’s not fair to put expectations ina kid that has yet to have taken a meaningful snap in a game or even a spring game at that.
